Training in Emergency Ultrasound

The use of focussed ultrasound in Emergency Medicine is a key skill of the modern emergency physician. As an Emergency Medicine trainee, you are expected to acquire this skill in the course of training.

The key elements for Emergency Medicine Point of Care Ultrasound are:

1  EFAST

2 Assessment of Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm

3 Echo in ALS Scenarios

4 Vascular Access

The Emergency Department has a MIndray TE7 portable ultrasound machine for clinical use. This will shortly be replaced with a Mindray TE9 machine. In addition, there are four Butterfly IQ+ hand held probes for educational use only. Dr Prendergast provides weekly teaching in ultrasound in the ED every Tuesday. A number of the consultants both teach and assess for the National Emergency Medicine Training Programme (NEMTP) which provides core training in Emergency Ultrasound.

The hospital has a number of task trainers for ultrasound guided procedures and the Bodyworks Eve system for cardiac, EFAST and AAA training.
