The new Emergency Department at the Midland Regional Hospital Tullamore was opened in December 2008. It is the largest emergency department in the Midlands. The department is recognised for Emergency Medicine training at both core and advanced levels. It is also recognised for training in General Practice.
It is currently staffed by four Consultants in Emergency Medicine, two Specialist Registrars in Emergency Medicine, six registrars in Emergency Medicine, two General Practice trainees, three trainees on the Core Speciality Training Programme in Emergency Medicine (CSTEM) and one senior house officer. Three other CSTEM trainees from the department are on rotation in Internal Medicine, Anaesthesia and Paediatrics in the Midlands. Subspeciality interests of the consultants include medical education, musculoskeletal medicine and emergency ultrasound. Consultants in the ED are examiners for both the Membership and Fellowship examinations of the Royal College of Emergency Medicine.
The Emergency Department has three resuscitation cubicles, sixteen general cubicles, two isolation rooms, a two-bedded plaster room, a See and Treat Room and an Advanced Nurse Practitioner Room. An office is available for the non-consultant clinical staff to enable non-clinical duties to be completed. Patients are triaged using the Manchester Triage Tool and the Irish Children’s Triage Scale, and patients are seen in order of priority. In 2018, the Emergency Department dealt with 34817 total patient attendances.
The Midland Regional Hospital Tullamore is the regional trauma unit with a bypass protocol in place to enable appropriate patients to be brought directly to the hospital. It is also the regional centre for Orthopaedics, Ear Nose and Throat Surgery, Oncology, Rheumatology and Renal Medicine. This is in addition to Acute Surgery, Acute Medicine and Critical and Intensive Care medicine. Other medical specialities on site include Cardiology, Gastroenterology and Medicine of the Elderly.
The Midland Regional Hospital Tullamore has a new state-of the art education centre. The centre has multiple tutorial room and lecture theatres. There is a skills laboratory for training in procedures and patient assessment.There is a library containing all reference books likely to be required in Emergency Medicine. It has full online access to the majority of medical journals available worldwide. The librarians are available if you require assistance with specific searches.
